Here's the original audition tape for future Chicago TV news legend, Linda Yu, who worked locally at WMAQ Channel 5 from 1979 to 1984, and then WLS Channel 7 up to her retirement in 2016.
This tape was made before Ms. Yu was hired even as a TV news writer, working at KABC Channel 7 (and progressing to on-air work), then at KATU Channel 2 in Portland, OR and KGO Channel 7 in San Francisco, before landing in Chicago. I asked Linda to share some of the story behind this tape. She writes:
"I had heard the L.A. NBC station [KNBC Channel 4] had an opening for one female reporter. I seem to remember 10-12 of us, mostly African American, some Hispanic and me. [I'm] not sure if we had a chance to practice with the copy....but considering what it was, I think they had grabbed some print article and asked each of us to read it.
I had never been in front of a camera before. No class in public speaking in High School or College. I was painfully shy. In fact, I don’t think I really believed I would get, or want, an on-air job. I had some interest in being a field producer, though I knew so little about TV news that I didn’t know the name of that job.
I didn’t get hired - but I tried many months later at the ABC station in LA [KABC Channel 7] and was hired as a summer relief writer, by Bill Fyffe...the man who became my mentor. He had also put me in front of a camera and told me years later, that he thought I 'reached thru the camera'. He hired me as a writer and started teaching me TV."
I think anyone watching this would agree that Linda Yu was a natural talent in front of the camera.
Linda recites her copy (likely chosen to be especially challenging), which coincidentally enough has a theme of women's empowerment:
"To all tyrants, autocrats and oppressors - that is, every American male: There is an answer to the tiresome bra-burning rhetoric and invasions of your male sanctuaries. That answer is: Look to the Israelis. Not only have they turned deserts into gardens and fought powers far greater than they, they've solved the Women's Lib issue with nary a march. The answer: Compulsory military service. Israeli women can't complain about unequal hiring practices - every girl and boy can expect to be inducted into military service. And as for equal pay, no advantages here for the supreme male; everybody gets a starting wage of $5.71 a month. The exploiters - men, of course - in the fashion industry, won't tell Israeli women what to wear this year. Miniskirts are in as part of the uniform, or an Israeli infantrywoman can slip into fatigue boots, khaki trousers and a helmet, any time she wants. When she tires of being ogled in the streets of Tel Aviv, the Israeli woman can free herself from the chains of sex symbolism - not with a steady karate chop to the solar plexus, but by picking up her UZI submachine gun, the best weapon of its kind. And no man is going to treat an Israeli woman with the patronizing air due a member of "the weaker sex." She can crawl under barbed wire, sleep in pup tents, and clean barracks with the best of men. American women may protest the tradition of feminine names for hurricanes, but there's hope for better things. The Israeli women's Army base is named Camp Deborah, and heading it is one of those triumphant figures of Women's Lib: a Jewish mother. This Colonel thinks a little radical expression from her girls is all right. There's a sign on one barracks reading, 'Make love, not war'; and another which says, 'Make babies, not bombs.' But - pardon the expression - a woman is always a woman. So the Colonel's first admonition to her new recruits is, 'Eat,' and brings on the chicken soup. The Colonel does have one feminist-sounding gripe, though: She says there are no women Generals in the Israeli Army, whereas men have eighteen. In all fairness, it should be noted that at last count, the women have one Prime Minister. The men, at the moment, have none. This is Linda Yu reporting."
Obviously, this did not air anywhere (except a few short excerpts shown during a "goodbye" story for Linda on WLS-TV before she retired) but as noted this was recorded on Monday, October 5th 1970.
